Do you want to learn to type quickly yourself or do you want your child to find the right keys in no time? Then a typing course is obviously a good idea. But it doesn’t stop there. Once you have your typing certificate, there are a few things you can do to become even faster. In fact, they have been scientifically researched. We are happy to share them with you, so that you can train your (or your child’s) typing speed!
Research with 168,000 participants
From NPO Radio 1 (a Dutch public broadcaster), we heard about British and Finnish scientists who researched the typing techniques of 168,000 people from more than 200 countries. They made an online test, in which they asked the participants to type fifteen sentences. The average score? 52 words per minute. The fastest reached 120 words per minute!
Advice to improve typing technique
The researchers also looked at factors that determine typing speed. Based on this, they gave five pieces of advice, with which you can improve your typing technique (if necessary, of course). Typewriting diploma or not? Use it to your advantage!
Look at the screen, not at your fingers.
We practise this at TypeTopia by using the BlindBox. If you look at the screen, you will see any typing mistakes more quickly. Moreover, you train yourself to hit the keys automatically. That is much quicker than if you had to think about it.
2. Tyr not to make typing errors, because correcting them costs a lot of time.
This tip speaks for itself. The fewer mistakes you make, the less time you will spend correcting them. And with the time that remains, you can type new letters and words. Your speed will increase considerably!
3. Practise deliberately what you have learned.
This prevents you from falling back into old habits. For example, remember which letters or key combinations were difficult and use them extra often. This is exactly what we do with our Reflex training practice.
4. Teach yourself the rollover technique.
You use different fingers for successive letter keys. You don’t hit all the keys with one finger. As you type one letter, you can press the next key. You can do this quickly if you type with ten fingers.
5. Test yourself once in a while to see what you are good at and what you can improve on.
Make sure that the test lets you type different sentences and words, otherwise you are not measuring your actual typing speed (but your memory). Do the TypeTopia typing test . Then you’ll know your typing speed within a minute!
